Taraweeh (tarawih) is the Arabic word which means “to rest and relax”. As it seen as a special form of Islamic meditation. Taraweeh prayer are Sunnah prayers perform at night after daily prayers Isha during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever stands for prayer (the night prayer) during Ramadan with iman (faith), hoping for rewards, then all his/her previous sins will be forgiven.

Furthermore, since the month of Ramadan multiplies the reward for good deeds, there are even greater rewards for Taraweeh:
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever draws nearer (to Allah) by performing any of the (optional) good deeds in (this month) shall receive the same reward as performing an obligatory deed at any other time, and whoever discharges an obligatory deed in (this month) shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time.”

What is Taraweeh Prayers Origins
In the last year of his life, Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), came out one night and prayed taraweeh. On that night, some people prayed with him. During the second night, word spread and more people joined in taraweeh. Even more people attended on the third night. On the fourth night, the mosque was packed and the people awaited the Prophet’s arrival.
The Prophet, however, prayed at home by himself. After fajr, he said: “Nothing prevented me from coming out to you except the fact that I feared that it would be made obligatory for you.” (Muslim)
From the time of Abu Bakr to the beginning of Umar’s time, people prayed either individually or in small groups. Later, ‘Umar gathered everyone behind one imam and they prayed 8 Rak
at. Eventually, it increased to 20 raka‘at to make it easy for the people.
Mow Many Rakat Prayer 8, 10 or 20?
There are some narrations of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) which support the opinion that Taraaweeh is twenty rak’ahs, and some narrations support the opinion that Taraaweeh completed by performing the prayer of eight rak’ahs. Taraweeh is twenty rak’ats. The opinion that tarawih is twenty rak’at has narrated by all four Sunni schools of fiqh.
According to a hadith of Sahih Al-Bukhari, Taraweeh prayer is eight rak’ats. The Holy Prophet (SAW) led the eight rak’at Taraweeh prayers. In Taraweeh, prayers offered in every two rak’ats in the same way as you offer prayers. The shortest is two rak’ats and the longest is 20 rak’ats. However, during the reign of Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz (717 to 720 AD), the people of Medina offered 36 rak’ats of Taraweeh prayers.
When he was asked about night prayer, he said: “Prayers at night are offered in two followed by two. Then, if you fear dawn will come, pray witr with one.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Narrated Abu Salama bin Abdur Rahman that
He asked Hazrat A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) about “How was the prayer of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) in Ramadan?” She replied,
“He did not pray more than 11 rak`at [a night] in Ramadan or any other month. He used to pray 4 rak`at -don’t ask me about their beauty and length–and then he would pray 4 more rak`at-don’t ask me about their beauty and length–and then he would pray 3 rak`at (of witar). ” She added, “
I asked, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! Do you sleep before praying the witar?’ He replied, ‘O `Ayesha! My eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep.”
Number of rakats and how it performed
Depending on the opinion you follow (or depending on how tired you) you can choose to pray eight rak’ats or twenty rak’ats (or any number of rak’ats), because Taraweeh prayers are two rak’ats. Tarawih prayed in sets of two rak’at each. Recommended interval between Taraweeh prayers after each set of four rakats. During this interval Muslims recite the Taraweeh Dua.
Praying Taraweeh at the mosque or home
While performing Taraweeh prayers in mosques is more rewarding than performing it at home. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done at home. Especially when there is a lockdown. This prayers can performed at home, alone or in congregation with family and friends.
